Contemplating Back Surgery in Houston?

If so, you should know that you are not alone. In fact, back pain is one of the most common ailments we treat at UGH Pain and Spine. For many of our patients, back pain can cause them to miss work, limit their mobility, and lead to intermittent or constant discomfort. Fortunately, many of these cases can be treated at our Houston back pain clinic. However, in some cases surgery may be recommended depending on the severity of the underlying condition.

A common condition for both men and women alike, low back pain can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks—or potentially longer, in some cases. Low back pain involves the muscles, nerves, and bones that make up a person’s spinal column. When those back muscles strain, it causes a ripple effect in which the tissues tear and, lacking the proper support, bones to become unstable.

Upper back pain typically occurs the thoracic spine region, which includes the upper back, the base of the neck, abdomen and rib cage. This pain can best be described as a burning or pulling sensation that tends to be localized within the source of a back injury or strain. As for middle back pain, it does not stem from one source or cause, but rather can be the result of, among other things, physical exertion, poor posture, and even a chiropractic visit gone wrong.

Causes and Symptoms of Back Pain

A person can develop back problems regardless of age, gender and other factors. As varied as the types of people with back pain are the causes for it, which include the following:

  • a slip and fall accident at home, the workplace or a public space
  • a sudden collision accident on roads or freeways
  • a muscle or ligament strain caused by lifting a heavy object
  • age-related degeneration of the spine (e.g., bulging or ruptured disks)
  • an inactive lifestyle accompanied by a fatty diet and tobacco/alcohol use
  • excess body weight that adds stress to the back and other body parts

The severity and duration of back pain can range from acute (approximately six weeks or less) to chronic (approximately three months or more). The former type of pain can be treated at our Houston back pain clinic, while the latter type may require surgery. To determine which category you fall into, your UGH Pain and Spine physician will look for the following symptoms:

  • muscle ache
  • shooting or stabbing pains
  • pain that travels down toward one or both legs
  • pain that worsens with any type of movement
  • weakness, numbness or tingling in the extremities

Back Pain Treatment Options

If you experience any trouble symptoms of back pain, we encourage you to visit a back pain clinic in Houston, particularly if the pain is chronic. In some cases, back pain can be a sign of a more serious condition that causes such symptoms as fever, dizziness, and bowel and bladder problems. Regardless of the form of back pain you suffer from, UGH is here to help.
