Sinus Center

Sinusitis is a disorder of the upper airway and is the most common chronic medical condition. Sinus can lead to debilitating pain and affects a person’s quality of life. Sinusitis could be acute, subacute, or chronic. Acute sinusitis occurs due to a viral infection and typically lasts for 1 to 2 weeks. Subacute sinusitis occurs due to a seasonal allergy or bacterial infection and lasts for up to 3 months. Chronic sinusitis occurs due to structural nasal problems or persistent allergies and lasts for more than 3 months. Certain people could be at a higher risk of sinusitis, such as those with a deviated nasal septum, nasal polyps, nasal bone spur, recent contact with mold, history of allergies, recent upper respiratory tract infection, weak immune system, cystic fibrosis, and dental infection.  

The UMMC Sinus Center provides state-of-the-art evaluation and treatment of patients of all age groups with sinus or other allergic disorders. Our team consists of sinus surgeons, physicians, pulmonologists, ENT specialists, nurses, and assistants who have a broad range of experience diagnosing and managing general and complex sinuses. The physicians may perform a physical and visual exam and, in some cases, a CT or MRI scan or an endoscopic exam to diagnose the type of sinusitis. Based on the diagnosis, medical interventions, decongestants, or surgery are recommended.
