NeuroStar Therapy

The NeuroStar TMS Therapy at UMMC is indicated for patients with the major depressive disorder who failed to receive a satisfactory improvement from previous antidepressant medication. The NeuroStar TMS Therapy is available only on prescription from a licensed physician. Both inpatients and outpatients can use this system. 

The NeuroStar TMS Therapy is an electro-mechanical computerized instrument that produces and delivers rapidly alternating magnetic fields for a brief duration to induce an electrical current in a localized region of the cerebral cortex. 

This therapy is approved by the USFDA for the treatment of major depressive disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. It is an excellent alternative to medications and is highly effective, non-invasive, and safe with minimal side effects. Patients undergoing NeuroStar TMS Therapy are always awake and alert during treatment and can return to their normal activities immediately after the treatment. The treatment takes approximately 40 minutes, and the duration is 4 to 6 weeks with five sittings every week. 

Highly-skilled and qualified psychiatrists mainly perform NeuroStar TMS Therapy. However, other trained physicians, nurse practitioners, assistants, and prescribing clinical psychologists also perform the therapy.
